Good Livestock
Husbandry is Good for Snow Leopards

From 1992 to 1997 artist Leslie Nguyen worked with her husband Terris Temple (www.tibetcolor.com) at the request of Tsurphu monastery in Tibet to create two traditional Buddhist thangkas – sacred paintings or appliques – to replace the treasured images (one measuring 108x70 feet) lost during the Cultural Revolution. To create the artwork for our poster, Leslie used silks and brocades blended with painting in a style adapted from the traditional techniques.

The poster shows two mountain settlements. “Harmony Valley” practices good environmental stewardship, while “Conflict Valley” could use improvement. The image is meant to stimulate discussion, and to encourage herders to make the connection between good livestock husbandry and elements of wildlife protection that are within their control.

We invite you, our web site visitor, to examine these two valleys. The poster image is active and will respond to your mouse. Think about what works well in Harmony Valley, and what is needed to improve Conflict Valley’s environmental stewardship. How might people be encouraged to think about what isn’t working, and how to change it? Think of a caption that expresses the poster's conservation message (or messages).
