At the base of Mount Kailash are two vast lakes, Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal. While the smaller Rakshas Tal is said to be the haunt of demons, pilgrims circle the sacred Manasarovar and drink and bathe in its water. The surrounding wetlands are important habitat for the black necked crane, an endangered species. The sources of four of South Asia’s greatest rivers are nearby: the Indus, the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Karnali, and the Sutlej.
