The Snow Leopard Conservancy was asked to provide information for the first tourist map of the Eastern Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. This area – known as Gorno Badakhshan – is one of the least explored parts of Central Asia. The map was produced by France’s Agence d’Aide à la Coopération technique at au Développement (ACTED), The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). SLC supplied descriptions of the wildlife and vegetation that trekkers may encounter in these renowned mountains – home to the world’s largest population of Marco Polo sheep, along with ibex, brown bears, and some snow leopards.
At a scale of 1:500,000, the beautifully colored contour map shows topography, roads, towns and settlements, and general facilities ranging from petrol stations to teahouses and post offices. Besides sections on fauna and flora, there are descriptions of the area’s history, landscape, culture, archaeology, nature conservation, and trekking routes by knowledgeable experts including Dr. Hermann Kreutzmann, Eva Kleinn, Cecile Veber, Vadim Ranow, Guy Delaunay, and Robert Middleton. The map was prepared by Markus Hauser.
