In February, 2004, the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund asked their 2003 grantees for nominations for this year’s Conservation Hero awards. Awards would be given for Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Marine environments. They were looking for an in-country staff member or collaborator who has made a significant contribution to the grantee’s conservation initiatives.
The Snow Leopard Conservancy took the step of nominating the entire village of Hushe. Please see Commendation for Conservation Action for details.
The award came with a gift of $1,000, and the honor of international recognition. Dr. Rodney Jackson, Director of the Snow Leopard Conservancy, had the pleasure of presenting the gift and the commemorative plaque during his visit to the region in June and July, 2004. See the Baltistan page (Pakistan) of our Conservation section for details of the field visit.
Many, many thanks to the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund for recognizing that the success of conservation initiatives depends upon the support and efforts of local residents.
The Indian daily newspaper The Hindu has recently published its Survey of the Environment 2004. Rinchen’s article, “Ladakh’s Snow Leopard: A Fighting Chance,” appears in the section on Success Stories.
Ladags Melong (Mirror of Ladakh), is the region’s own magazine, reflecting on all aspects of Ladakhi life and culture. Rinchen’s article is entitled, “Villagers Adopt Wildlife Conservation.”
