The one jeep road that links Zanskar with the outside world winds its way for 125 miles (three days), over the 15,500-foot Pensi La. It’s a long, bumpy ride, but preferable to the footpaths that lead over several passes above 17,000 feet. In winter, the only way in or out is via the frozen Zanskar River, an “ice walk” of some 60 miles each way. These field notes attest to the difficulty of travel in this remote, beautiful and fascinating region – whether it’s undertaken in summer or in winter.
